Setting

Why might a director choose the following settings?

1. An isolated house in a rural setting for a horror film.

A director might choose this setting for a horror film because it makes it creepier if the house is in the middle of no where as the characters cannot escape easily and get help if they are in danger so it is more likely that whatever is after the characters will be able to get to the characters.

2. A big city for an action film

A director might choose this setting for an action film because usually cities are very busy and usually a lot happens in an action film so it would make sense for the film to be set in a busy place

3. A small seaside town for a romantic comedy

A director might choose thing setting for a romantic comedy because it is usually quite peaceful in a small seaside town and a romantic comedy would also be quite calm and peaceful.

4. A range of different countries for action and adventure.

A director might choose thing setting for action and adventure because if the characters were traveling to different countries it would match the genre and a lot of things could happen whilst they are travelling to a range of different countries which would make sense for an action film.

5. A large modern science laboratory for a science fiction film.

A director might choose thing setting because the characters would probably spend most of their time in the laboratory during the film and the audience would expect a science laboratory to be in a science fiction film.

Colour

Why might the director choose the following colours?

1. Blue and red for a superhero costume

The director might choose these colours because they are eye catching and usually the main focus of the film is the superhero so it makes sense for a superhero to wear eye catching colours.

2. A black suit for a villain

The director might choose black because black is associated with darkness and evil.

3. Bright colours for a comedy

The director might choose bright colours because usually comedies are fun and cheerful and bright colours are associated with fun and cheerfulness so it matches the themes of the film.

1. Where does the action take place?

It takes place in a small town.

2. Why do you think the story was set in that particular place?

I think it was set in a small town because it makes it creepier when something scary happens in a small place where it usually is quite calm and it causes more disruption.

3. How does the setting effect the characters and the way they behave?

The setting affects the characters because the characters have to live in close proximity to Pennywise which would make them more scared and more determined to get rid of Pennywise.

4. How could you tell where the story was taking place?

I could tell were the story was taking place because the characters talked about it and i was able to see the background and there were several shots that allowed me to see where the story was set.

5. Could the same story happen in a different place?

A similar story could happen in a different place.

6. What clues might there be to tell us whether the story is set now, in the future or in the past?

The clothes the characters are wearing, the things they are interested in, the cars

7. Why do you think certain colours were used?

I think that most of the colours are dull however some of the colours are bright because if the colours are dull, when a character is wearing a bright colour they are eye-catching and they will be the main focus. For example pennywise has quite bright red hair and yellow eyes which would therefore draw more attention to him. There is also a lot of red which can be associated with blood.

8. Are any colours associated with any characters?

Yes. The colour red is associated witch pennywise because he has a red balloon, red hair and he just has a lot of red on him which makes sense because he is the villain and the colour red can be associated with blood, demons and evilness.

9. How important are the colours in the film?

They are quite important.

10. What would the film had been like if it was in black and white or just in one colour?

The film would not be as effective as the characters would not stand out as much.
