10. How are the DPS laid out?
There usually have images spread out with writing around them. There are often adverts at the bottom of the pages promoting animal related companies. There is usually a heading in bold on the first page and then all of the writing and images on both pages relate to that title.
11. How many images are used in the DPS?
Around 4 images tend to be used.
12. How many different fonts are used and how do they vary?
The main font used tends to be sans serif which maybe 1 or 2 words in a script or serif font. The headings tend to be a bit bigger than the main text and the headings tend to be bold.
13. How is the text organised?
The text tends to be written in columns under the headings.
What house style (characteristics to differentiate from other brands) is established by the use of fonts/colours/images/layout?
The colour palette of the cover and the double page spread are similar as they mainly consist of orange, white and green. The same image from the front cover is also used on the double page spread therefore making it consistent. The information on the double page spread also links to the cover lines on the front cover. For example, one of the cover lines is 'Cute Bunnies Starting Out Right With the Hay Experts' and the heading in the double page spread is 'Cute Bunnies Starting Out Right!' with information about hay and food for rabbits underneath therefore linking it to the front cover of the magazine.
Production values?
I think that both the cover and dps look as if they have mid production values.
What ideology is presented (the values and aspirations that are important to them)?
As the front cover and dps are about how to care for bunnies correctly it suggests that they want to teach people how to care for animals and to be responsible pet owners. This could appeal to the target audience of 14-18 year olds as if their parents won't let them get pets and they want pets in the future they may want to start learning more about how to care for animals and if they already have a pet they may want to learn how to improve caring for it. However, it would also appeal to older age groups as well.
What colour palette and typography is used? Both the cover and dps use mainly the colours orange and green with accents of purple. The text is mainly either white or black in a sans serif font.
How are the people or areas featured represented? The rabbits are represented as cute by making them look almost cartoon or baby-like (as it is at an angle which makes the rabbit look quite small and it has shiny eyes)which often appeals to a lot of people especially younger people.
Who is the target audience? It could appeal to a range of people however i think it mainly appeals to female young adults/adults as it is about starting out with a pet rabbit and usually young adults are the ones who get new pets that they may not have had before however it could also appeal to teenagers with pet rabbits or teenagers who want to get a pet rabbit in the future. I think it mainly appeals to women because it describes the rabbits as cute which is a trait often associated with femininity and caring for animals often tends to be associated with sensitivity which is another characteristic seen as feminine.
What house style (characteristics to differentiate from other brands) is established by the use of fonts/colours/images/layout?
The cover and double page spread mainly consist of images of dogs and the first cover line links to the dps therefore getting straight to the point and being consistant meaning that the reader will not get bored and will get the exact information they would expect when they bought the magazine. Most of the text the cover an is in a sans serif font apart from the main cover line which is sans serif. The text on the dps mainly consists of serif.
Production values?
Both the cover and dps look as if they are a fairly high production value due to the good quality of the images used and because of the modern, fresh look that it has to it which is created through the use of an organised layout and fresh appearing colours like light brown, white, grey, orange and yellow.
What ideology is presented (the values and aspirations that are important to them)?
Due to the lexis used on the cover, it is suggested that they like to educate people on animals like different types of birds, the history of dogs and what do to when taking your pets on holiday. This suggests that the like knowing information about animals rather than just caring for them.
What colour palette and typography is used?
The colour palette used mainly consists of white, orange and light brown and the fonts mainly consist of sans serif, serif and script.
How are the people or areas featured represented? The dogs are almost presented as majestic or mysterious especially in the DPS due to the way the dogs are posed and the lexis used to describe them such as "mysterious origins". They are also presented as being good companions for people through the use of lexis such as "fluffy companions", "the ability to read human facial expressions". They are also presented as intelligent and fascinated through the language used to describe how they have evolved and the things they can do.
Who is the target audience? I would say the target audience are adults as adults stereotypically like knowing more of the history and background information about things. Adults are also the ones who would be likely to take their dogs on holiday. The colours used such as light brown are quite cool toned and sophisticated which would appeal more to adults than teenagers or children. Adults especially older men are associated with bird watching which is mentioned in the cover therefore making it more likely to appeal to adults. There is also a puff saying that there is a christmas gift guide in their and it is generally mainly adults who would be shopping for christmas gifts.

LO: To produce a concise and clear statement
The brief I have chosen is an animal welfare magazine which appeals to a teen audience of 14-18 year olds. The name of my magazine is Catus as the scientific name for cats is felis catus which links to my sub-genre which is cats, however I felt that the full scientific name was too formal to appeal to a teenage audience so I shortened it in order to make it more informal which is more likely to appeal to teenagers as teens are stereotypically seen as being casual and informal. The slogan I have chosen is ‘cats will rock your world’ and I have chosen to use this as the word ‘rock’ is often used in an informal context and links to things like rock music which may not linked to cats however it has connotations of rebellion and this therefore appeals to teens who are often seen as rebellious compared to other age groups. Both my slogan and my name for the magazine do not have any links to a certain gender therefore making it appealing to different genders.
The style I have chosen to use is a mid-production value and modern in appearance as my magazine needs to look good quality so that teens will be intrigued by it yet I do not want it to be too high quality as that may make it look too formal. I would like my magazine to look modern as teenagers tend to stereotypically be more interested in trending topics which a modern overall look will suggest.
In order to stick to the codes and conventions of an animal welfare magazine I am using a bright colour palette and images of cats which are often used in animal welfare magazines. In one of the images I have used an image of a stereotypical looking teen with a cat in order to not only appeal to teens but also follow the codes and conventions of animal welfare magazines. The article in my dps (‘Which breed of cat are you based on your star sign’) has an intertextual reference to star signs as astrology/spirituality is currently popular among teens (mainly girls but also some boys) therefore making it appealing to them. Linking cats to a part of their identity will appeal to teens as they tend to be more interested in personal things that they can find relatable however if the dps was just a formal article about cats they may not find it very relatable or appealing. The cover also contains cover lines linking to this specific dps to attract the teen audience that it is aimed at and it will also contain other cover lines suggesting that there are other articles which fit more into the codes and conventions of a typical animal welfare magazine.

Target Audience
LO: To research our target audience to enable successful marketing.
Age:14-18
Gender: Male or female but mainly female as stereotypically girls are more inclined to have caring traits towards animals.
Hobbies and interests: Caring for animals and animals in general.
Location: Probably a more rural area due to there being more animals in rural areas.
Important to them: Animal welfare, caring for others especially animals.
Education: In secondary school or sixth form/college.
Personality: Probably quite introverted and laid back.
Why would this magazine appeal to them? The teens that would find my magazine appealing would find it appealing because they are interested in the welfare of animals or care about animals in general. They would also most likely have grown up around animals/with pets if they live in a rural area therefore increasing their interest in animals.
Favourite subjects: Their favourite subjects are likely to be things like animal care or biology as these subjects are heavily associated with animals.
Social media: They would probably use the same social media that every stereotypical teenager would such as Instagram, Tik tok and Snapchat.
Opinion of school: Probably don't enjoy the academic aspect of school yet may enjoy seeing their friends at school like most teenagers do.
Income/job: They most likely only have pocket money or a part time job as their main form of personal income and their parents most likely have an average or slightly high income due to the fact that they most likely own a pet which can be expensive because of vet bills etc. They are most likely aspiring to get a career in the animal care industry like a vet.
